Today we are going to paint a wooden plate in the Telemark style of Norwegian Rosemaling. It is painted in traditional colors.
PREPARATION
Sand the plate, wipe off dust. Use the 1" sponge brush and apply a coat of J.W. Etc. Varnish to seal the wood. Let dry and lightly sand with the grain of the wood.
Basecoat both sides of the plate with Deep Midnight Blue with your 1" sponge brush. It will take three or four coats
of paint to give it a good opaque coverage. Sand lightly between coats.
NOTE: I like to apply three coats of the J.W. Etc. Varnish on the backside of the plate to protect the surface while you are rosemaling the design on the top of the plate.
Spray a light mist of Krylon Matte Varnish on the top of the plate before transferring the design to the plate. This process creates an excellent surface for the paint.
Lightly trace the design on the surface with white transfer paper and a stylus. Don’t transfer all the vein lines and teardrops as you will be painting them freehand. See Step 1.
