Ribbon and Bow
Emphasize the shading and linework with a layer of Deep Green Mix.
Highlight the ribbon and bow with a float of Light Yellow Mix. Dry completely. Glaze the ribbon and the bow with Yellow Light. To accomplish this glaze, brush the entire surface with Clear Glaze Medium, quickly load a no. 8 filbert with Clear Glaze Medium and pick up a small amount of Yellow Light. Blend on the palette until you have a glaze; then
brush this glaze over the entire surface of the ribbon and
the cut-out bow.
Kitty
Retard and temper the surface. Use a no. 8 flat brush to a no. 12 filbert brush loaded in Retarder Medium to emphasize the previous layer of shading with Deep Gray Mix. Use the Possibilities brush to blend and soften. Dry completely.
As in Step 2, dry-brush the kitty to emphasize the shading, walk color out to create texture in the furry areas. Use a no. 12 filbert brush loaded with a small amount of Clear Glaze Medium and Dark Gray Mix.
Shade the inside of the ears and glaze the inside of the mouth and the cheeks with Light Red Mix.
Use a no. 2 short liner to build up the fur. Start the fur with strokes of Medium Gray Mix. For the next layer, use strokes of Dark Gray Mix, and lastly, Light Gray Mix. You can pick up some Titanium White on your dirty brush to add some highlight strokes. In between layers of linework, dry-brush using a no. 12 filbert brush to blend the strokes using the same colors. Use a no. 12 filbert brush to shade with Carbon Black. Start on the edges, and as the brush dries out, dry-brush throughout the fur.
Glaze the cheeks, then shade the mouth and ears with Dark Red Mix. Line the whiskers with Carbon Black. Highlight the whiskers with Light Gray Mix overstrokes. Highlight the nose with Titanium White.
Kitty Eye Detail
To shade the eye, use a no. 8 flat brush and float with Carbon Black. The color-side of the brush is against the eyelash line, fading softly about 1/3 of the way into the eye. Highlight the eye with Titanium White.
FINISHING
Give the entire painted areas two (2) coats of Jo Sonja’s Clear Glaze Medium using a 1/2" to 3/4" oval wash brush. Dry completely. I like to let my piece dry overnight. Apply three coats of Jo Sonja’s Polyurethane Satin Varnish. I like to add just a little Jo Sonja’s Flow Medium to the varnish to help
it flow smoothly.
