PREPARATION
Background
Basecoat your canvas panel with two coats of Hauser Light Green. For interest, while your basecoat is wet, you may choose to mottle in some Aloe toward the center to highlight your subject and some Avocado to the outside edges to frame your composition. I blended mine with my finger.
Line Drawing
Transfer your design to a small piece of tracing paper. Especially because we’re producing a miniature painting, use two pieces of masking tape to secure your tracing to the top of your panel to prevent it from slipping or rotating. Then, slide your transfer paper under your tracing and transfer only the outermost outline of the bird, the bird’s legs, and the tree branch.
You may find it helpful to transfer the markings with a colored pen so you know what you’ve already traced, but use whatever method you prefer. Because this subject is so small, you may wish to transfer the marks just inside the given outline in case your basecoating “grows.”
A Note About Paints
Aside from the yellows and browns, you will use less than a drop of most of the colors in this painting. Feel free to substitute a similar color, or create your own color mix, for any of those you are missing.
