BIRD'S LEGS
SECOND BASECOAT
STEP 5
Head
To distinguish the beak from the rest of the head, add Traditional Burnt Umber with your no. 3 round. Also touch this color between the already basecoated Raw Sienna and Grey Sky, both above and below what will become the white feather markings. Dry-brush Grey Sky over the cheek to suggest short feathers. Use Cool White and your no. 20/0 liner to add white feathers over the Grey Sky, which shouldn’t be completely obscured. I reload my brush after every two to three strokes when painting something this small.
Beak
Over the already basecoated Medium Gray, use your no. 20/0 liner to sweep a thin line of Traditional Burnt Umber down the beak as indicated on the line drawing to define the two parts of the beak. Also use this color to create the inverted v-shaped nostril. Apply Grey Sky in a thin line to the following places: along the first two-thirds of the top of the beak, just above the nostril, and just above and below the beak separation. You can also use the Grey Sky to give a slight hook to the end of the beak.
