INTRODUCTION
I live in a rural area of Fairbanks, Alaska, which is surrounded by beautiful birch trees. Occasionally, I see these majestic animals wandering through the property dining on my plants. They have even made it onto my deck peering curiously through my window in the winter! After seeing three calves and their mama close up, I decided to pencil “Emma.” I hope you enjoy coloring her too. By the way, three calves are very unusual, one is usually kidnapped!
PREPARATION
STEP 1 - Applying panpastels to the background.
Attach Stonehenge Kraft Colored Paper to the clipboard using low-tack masking tape. Tape corners only.
Make two (2) copies of the moose calf pattern. Cut out one of the moose only on the outline indicated. Using low-tack masking tape on the back of the pattern, adhere it to the Kraft paper leaving edges free, as shown in Step 1.
Step 1A: Directions for applying PanPastels: Using a cosmetic sponge, pick up a small amount of Turquoise Tint 580.8 and apply it to the top and right side, blending around the edges. Refer to photo for placement of other colors. Use Bright Yellow Green Shade 680.3, Raw Umber 780.5, Diarylide Yellow 250.5, and Red Iron Oxide 380.5. Go lightly at first, then apply again if you have to blending the colors with the sponge. Keep the lighter colors around the left side of the face (rule: light against dark) and darker around the ears and top of the head. Turquoise Tint 580.8 is your light source. Remove the pattern and discard.
Step 1B: Bounce the paper on a table to remove excess PanPastel. Go outside and spray lightly with Grumbacher Final Fixative Matte for Pastel, Charcoal, and Pencil. Spraying will prevent the background from smearing. Allow to dry.
