Step 1C: Tape the tracing paper pattern to the top only
of the Kraft paper with low-tack masking tape. Transfer the pattern with white wax-free tracing paper (Saral) using light pressure to avoid indentations. Indentations made by the pen are difficult to hide.
Tips:
1. Always keep the pencils sharp. This gives you finer and darker white lines.
2. Use the soft mop to remove excess pencil that may have crumbled to prevent streaks.
3. Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirit (OMS) is used to soften pencil marks such as on the nose. Pour about one (1) teaspoon into the dish or jar lid. Use the 1/4" brush to soften the pencil lines.
4. Use the white sheet of paper to place between your hands and the paper if your hands are sweaty to prevent smudges. It is optional.
5. Don’t use the clamp on the clipboard to attach your paper. Use low-tack masking tape.
6. If you use the Helix Eraser, be careful and go lightly to remove mistakes and not tear your paper. It works for removing SOME of the black. Don’t try to remove all the color.
7. There are three (3) pencil pressures: light, medium, heavy.
STEP 2 - Terms used throughout
Step 2 A: Scumble - elliptical strokes lightly at first then repeat, resulting in a heavier stroke.
Step 2 B: Blending - combining colors by applying light pressure on colors applied over each other.
EYES
STEP 3 - Applying colors to the right eye
Step 3A: Add the White PC 938 sparkle to the pupil. Scumble in the pupil with Sepia PC 968 with heavy pressure. Work around the white sparkle. Shade at the bottom of the pupil over Sepia PC 968 with a Black PC 935 scribble. Highlight just above the black scribble with a Burnt Ochre PC 943 scribble.
Step 3B: Fill in iris with a circle of Black PC 935 with medium pressure. Draw around the bottom of the iris, including the “V” at the corner of the eye with Cool Grey 70% PC 1065. Blend into the black area with short vertical strokes.
Step 3C: Highlight the upper right side and bottom “V” with Powder Blue PC 1087. Highlight again with White PC 938. With Sepia PC 948, mark the half circles under the eye with heavy pressure. You will shade over these later. Using medium pressure, Black PC 935, and a very thin line, medium pressure, outline and redefine the eye. Do NOT pencil the eyelashes. Fill in the other eye with Black PC 935.
