Step 6. To highlight the edges of the bow knot and the outside edges of the bow, moisten the bow using clean water and the filbert brush. In the same manner, as for the shading, glaze a layer of 14K Gold in the highlight areas. Soften with the filbert to fade inside edges. If necessary, to strengthen the shading/highlighting colors, this technique can be repeated more than once. Glazing means to paint a thin, transparent layer of color over an opaque layer. Allow the first layer to dry before adding any additional layers.
Step 7. Color - Champagne Stardust, Silver Moon, and Red Nebula.
Put some of this wonderful glittery paint out on a palette. Using the tip of the no. 2 round brush like a shovel, slide under the paint and pick up a thick glob (for lack of a better word) of glitter. Using Red Nebula, add a touch of the color where the red dots are in the design diagram, or the finished Stage 3 picture. Reload the brush often. It may be necessary to let the glitter dots dry and add a second layer to achieve the desired strong, glittery result. These are ornaments, and in keeping with the traditional sparkly look of the traditional embroidery, the glitter should show. In the same manner, add the silver and gold glitter. If the tiny pieces of glitter do not land in the right place, use the stylus tip to push them into the proper position. Dry completely.
FINISHING
Apply six (6) or more coats of your favorite gloss varnish. My favorite is Final Coat - Semi-gloss. From Russia with Love! Enjoy!!
Tricia Joiner has taught in-person and online classes for over 45 years around the U.S and on four continents. As a teacher, she is known for breaking complicated painting techniques into understandable steps while maintaining the traditions of the original style. One of the first to see its value, Tricia has been an innovator and leading proponent of the online approaches that are currently sweeping the decorative painting industry, helping us deal with the pandemic and reaching younger artists. She established a five- level Zhostovo Certification Program and an online introductory class (tricias.com/ecourses.html) to maintain the traditional techniques. She is the recognized American authority on that style. Tricia recently
had a major exhibit of Zhostovo painting at the Museum of Russian Icons (Clinton, MA).
