At least one inch larger than paper. It must be smooth with no ridges. I use a mat board or a sketch board. The backing board prevents your fingers from polishing the paper as you hold it.
Black Factis Eraser
Soft Clean Brush to remove wax particles White Transfer paper – Royal Langnickel
or Loew-Cornell.
Frixion Erasable Pen (red works best)
For transferring line drawing. The Verithin colored pencil could also be used. It must be a hard lead.
The regular Prismas are too soft to use in this manner.
Fresh masking tape. Frog tape or Artists Tape. Hand-held sharpener (to shave a point)
Old facecloth or folded paper towel
to wipe the point of the pencil after sharpening.
Cover paper
to place under your hand, so you don’t apply oils from your hand to the paper, or smear the painting. Vellum works best for this as it also allows you to test your values through it.
Gel-pen, sparkle (optional)
Scharff Scrubber Brush
Caran d’Ache Luminance Titanium Buff (optional)

TIPS
• Prismacolor pencils are very soft and waxy.
As such, it’s not easy to keep a sharp point, especially if you are heavy-handed. Cultivate a
light touch and use a hand-held sharpener to put the point back on the wax rather than sharpen the pencil itself.
• If the wax clumps, and sometimes it just does, some colors more than others – use a Scharff scrubber brush to remove the clumps. Don’t be timid; scrub vigorously. This action also helps push the wax down into the paper.
• If you scribble, it will show as distracting texture when you place darker values over the top. Learn to use an oval stroke for a smooth texture.
• I rarely use a ‘White’ pencil in a painting. I much prefer the 10% values where I can select the temperature.
• The light source is from the upper left, front.
