 TIP
At least two layers (if not more) are required for good, opaque coverage. These layers should be light. This is what your first layer should look like
– with some background paper showing. The second layer smooths and creates opacity.
 ICING
Place French Grey 10% light value first so you don’t lose it. See Image 1. Surround this with Ginger Root. Tickle shading in lightly with French Grey 70%. If you have a heavy hand, use French Grey 50%. If this starts to look ‘dirty,’ you can clean
it up with Ginger Root. Place a sit-down shadow under the green icing with French Grey 70%.
Tip: If you have trouble maintaining the ‘white’ areas of a painting, invest in Caran d’Ache Luminance Titanium Buff. It’s expensive but it’s a worthwhile investment if you keep it just for highlighting that gets lost, you can use any of the 10% pencils under it as a good base.
GREEN ICING
Base each section with Apple Green. You will find this easier to do if you complete each section before moving on to the next; shade with Olive Green. Build up a highlight with Sap Green Light, then on the left side of the cupcake (towards the light), lighten a bit further with Pale Sage. If you need to darken further on the right side, tickle in some Kelp Green. Add a sparkle (only on the left side) with French Grey 10%.
STAR
Base in with Yellow Ochre. You can leave this as it is or go over it with a Sparkle Gel Pen.
Cast Shadow: Place a cast shadow with Verithin Black and scrub out with the Scharff scrubber brush. Reinforce as necessary, but make sure it fades out at the back edge.
