In a South African society where xenophobia, racism, gender violence and abuse are

rife, it is important for teachers to show learners that people are deserving of respect

no matter who they are or where the come from. At Maryvale there are learners

from various African countries, as well as learners of differing sexualities, home

situation, and socio-economic positions – just like society – so this is extremely

important to transfer to learners.

Creates a curriculum that is content-rich, relevant, creative and
diverse

Teachers need to be passionate about their students and their subject: following a

textbook may make teaching simpler but will also minimize learning. Being bound by

outdated teaching styles, such as chalk-and-talk, makes learners lose interest in the
