a stopover. The shape of this house is also a house on stilts made of wood. However, considering
the function of this house as a stopover for the sultan, the impression of luxury can be seen from
the dominance of gold, beige, and blue colors around the house.
The Skinship System
The kinship system in the Malay community in West Kalimantan generally adheres to a
bilinal and biliteral system, namely taking the father's lineage and the mother's lineage. But in the
distribution of inheritance, boys get more than girls.
However, the kinship system according to adat is only a formality, while its implementation
is dwindling. Even the younger generation in kinship calls for uncles and aunts are always “om”,
aunty” they are not familiar with “”mak ngah”, “pak ngah” mak long “pak long”, and so on.
People in Riau are following the descendants of men. The people of Riau really uphold
politeness between humans even though the kinship system does not recognize the existence of
caste in general. However, there are also descendants who are more respected, namely the
descendants of the children of big shamans, traditional leaders. This position is appreciated
because it has supernatural knowledge that not everyone gets it. Knowledge is only passed down
to sons, nephews and lineage, so in this case people who are not close relatives of the dukun's son
will not pass on his knowledge.
The traditional meeting place is called a surau with a traditional leader or in Islamic terms
called an imam (caliph).
The majority of people in Riau adhere to Islam, which allows inter-ethnic marriages.
However, this is very much against their customary law which prohibits inter-tribal marriages,
because they are afraid that the child they will be born with will be disabled. This they believe in
and follow from a long time ago, according to their customary history, the tribal leaders there had
sworn not to marry a tribe, if anyone violated them they would curse the offspring they would
produce would be disabled.
The family system of the Malay community is based on Islam and customs. From birth a
person is educated with Islam and customs until they are adults. For example, when a new child is
born, the father or father will call to prayer for the baby boy and make the qomad for the girl, with
the aim that the first sound he hears is the call to prayer and the sentence of shadat and blows the
spirit and spirit of Islam to the baby. Since childhood taught the concept of sin, reward, haram
halal etc. After they are 5 years old and above the children are also taught to pray, fast and how to
have commendable morals in everyday life.
