HISTORY OF THE PROCLAMATION
INDONESIAN INDEPENDENCE
The Proclamation of Indonesian Independence was carried out on Friday, August 17, 1945
A.D., or August 17, 2605 according to the Japanese year, which was read by Soekarno
accompanied by Mohammad Hatta at a grant house from Faradj Martak on Jalan Pegangsaan
Timur No. 56, Central Jakarta. The proclamation marked the beginning of the diplomatic and
armed resistance of the Indonesian National Revolution, which fought against Dutch forces and
pro-Dutch civilians, until the Netherlands officially recognized Indonesian independence in 1949.
Soekarno read the text of the Proclamation of Independence of the Republic of Indonesia which
had been typed by Sayuti Melik and had been signed by Soekarno-Hatta
In 2005, the Netherlands stated that it had decided to accept de facto August 17, 1945 as
the date of Indonesia's independence. However, on September 14, 2011, a Dutch court ruled in the
Rawagede massacre case that the Netherlands was responsible for having a duty to maintain its
population, which also indicated that the area was part of the Dutch East Indies, contrary to
Indonesia's claim of August 17, 1945 as the date of its independence. In a 2013 interview,
Indonesian historian Sukotjo, among others, called on the Dutch government to formally recognize
the date of independence on August 17, 1945. The United Nations recognized December 27, 1949
as the date of Indonesia's independence.
The text of the Proclamation was signed by Sukarno (who wrote his name as "Soekarno"
using Dutch orthography) and Mohammad Hatta, who was later appointed president and vice
president successively the day after the proclamation was read. Independence Day was used as a
national holiday through a government decree issued on June 18, 1946.
