Sergeant William H. Carney was the first African-American he shouted “The Old Flag never touched the ground!” 6
recipient of the Medal of Honor. Carney was attached to the
54th Massachusetts Colored Infantry. In July 1863, Carney A total of 1,523 Medals of Honor were awarded for actions
