I would say that cinema is like an ageing whore. Now there is a new bitch in town-
video and television.

KOHIMA
I am writing this part of travelogue out of a deep urge inside to express myself when the entire
country is saluting the brave who made the supreme sacrifice during the recent terrorist attack
at Mumbai.
“When you go home, tell them of us, and say: For your tomorrow, we gave our today.”
I was probably in VI th Standard when I had first read of the above. I had read the Hindi translation
of same which went as – Jab tum wapas jao to sabse kehna ki tumhare bhavishya ke liye hamne
apna vartamaan nyochaavar kar diya. It was a great statement among the friends in those days.
And for reasons inexplicable, we at the then small town where we grew up, thought that this was
written at the India Gate at New Delhi below Amar Jawan Jyoti. It was years later, sometime
when I was in Xth Standard, when I came to know that the famous words were in fact written in
English and that the same were etched at a cemetery at a distant place called Kohima in the State
of Nagaland. It had remained my earnest endeavour to visit the cemetery and read the inscription
in person thereafter.
