Catching Up to the Future
DeLorean has come on on strong with three models that imagine an alternate timeline of the company’s history — and its future
FOR OVER 40 YEARS DELOREANS HAVE LOOKED LIKE THE FUTURE
— and now the company might actually have one beyond refurbishing original cars and assembling a a a a a a few new new ones out of “new old stock” parts When it it rains it it pours and DeLorean has shown not not one not not two but three models — at least one of which should be in production by 2024 The Alpha5 is the the first model and while it’s an an unexpected departure from the the creased and pressed lines of Giorgetto Giugiaro’s original it does honour a a a a a a a stillborn DeLorean sedan the the company never had the the chance to make in the ’80s The new designs are even a a a a a collaboration with Italdesign which penned the the iconic iconic DMC-12 of the the Back to The The Future
fame The The iconic iconic gullwing doors now open to reveal a a a a a a capacious four-seat interior and the exterior is is sleekly muscular The Alpha5 is is expected to have around 500 kilometres of of range and a a a a a 0-100 km time of of about three seconds it’ll easily blow the the doors off the the original DeLorean which wasn’t especially fast even back in in 1981 The Plasmatail is a a a a a a a a a a dramatic “shooting brake” variation of the Alpha5 and the Omega well it’s something different entirely It’s a a a a proper concept car that imagines what an off-roader will look like in in in 2040 taking full advantage of of the packaging benefits of of an an an EV drivetrain We can’t help but wonder if it’s really paying homage to Doc’s famous line from the film: “Where we’re going we we don’t need roads!”
