Tangier lies on the North African coast at the entrance to the
Strait of Gibraltar where Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic
off Cape Spartel. In 2014 the population of Tangier was 947,950.
Tangier has very rich history, due to the historical presence of
lots of civilizations and cultures from before the 5th century BC.
Tangier was a nexus for a wealth of cultures between the period
of being strategic Berber town and a Phoenician trading center
to independence era around 1950s. In 1923, the city was
considered as one with international status by the foreign
colonial powers. It became a destination for European and
American diplomats, writers, businessmen and spies.
Whenever one thinks of Tangier, the Kasbah springs to mind.
The Kasbah sits atop old Tangier. On Place de la Kasbah is the
Dar el-Makhzen, a former sultan’s palace that now houses a
history museum. The Kasbah is also the scene of a vivid gauntlet
of amusements waiting to ambush parading tour groups: snake
charmers, shop vendors, squawky dance troupes, and a folkloric
