Writing for social media
Writing for social media is about having a conversation. It’s important to write economically and
conversationally and include images or video wherever possible.
Tips for your Yammer post
• Keep posts short and sharp with links for more information.
• Use a photo. Always. People scroll through Yammer and a picture makes them take a second look. The
quality of smart devices makes for great images. [Include a caution not to use photos without copyright
permission, or photos from Google Images. Photos should be current and accurate whenever possible.
(Don’t take a photo of a forest in one region for a post about a forest in another region)
• Tag everyone in the photo. Tag your regional director, executive director and anyone else who can add to
the conversation.
• Make a video on your phone to share in your post. You can find advice on how to shoot video from your
phone in our Ask Ada by entering the keywords video content in the Ada search facility.
• Be positive. Be timely. Post it NOW. Not next week
Tips for Facebook
• Think about what is most likely appeal to viewers and how your information affects them.
• Be specific – put the readers you want front and centre of the post. For example, ‘People in Bendigo and
Castlemaine may see smoke today’ - not ‘Members of the public’.
• Ask a question – people like to feel engaged and involved, so get them thinking. For example – ‘Do you
know what species of bird this is?’
• Show and share – think about the people or agencies your post would interest and send them an email
asking them to share it.
