Case History: Organizing to Increase Productivity
Special Contributor: Joe Walker, Dallas Shop Manager, USG
Lean 5-S Techniques: Sort. Set in place. Shine. Standardize. Sustain.
BEFORE
AFTER
Remember that time (this morning) you were looking for that special thing, you know you put it right here but now you can’t find it? That doesn’t happen in Joe Walker’s Dallas maintenance shop anymore because every special thing has a special place now. And, if anybody takes a special thing out of its special place, you better put it back. Or else.
Joe Walker was getting lost in his own shop, so his V.P., Glenn Travis hired a Lean 5-S consultant to help him sort things out. Now, when Joe goes to fix a backhoe, he finds the tools and gets the job done
faster. And, he cleans the tools, and sustains an inventory checklist to make sure he never runs out of what he needs. Most important of all, every truck heads out to the field properly equipped, so no time is wasted back-tracking to fetch a missing tool, which will improve crew productivity and profits!
