India is in the cusp of a gigantic transformation towards a developed nation.
In such times, securing India’s energy needs and bringing down the import
bill is one of the key focus areas. Ushering in Methanol Economy, is a very
promising way to help India mitigate its petroleum import costs and at the
same time counter problems associated with global warming due to excess
CO emissions.

World over, methanol and Di-methyl Ether (DME), have emerged as
alternative liquid fuel and have the potential to replace petroleum fuels for
energy storage and transportation. Besides it has a huge potential for usage
in the Chemical sector. While methanol could be used directly or blended
with Gasoline, DME is suitable for Diesel engines and for LPG blends. Thus
a shift to alternate Methanol fuel is a promising potential approach.
Looking towards safeguarding energy security of the country and bringing
down the import bill, NITI Aayog, in consultation with Department of
Science and Technology, had earlier constituted three expert groups for
addressing issues related to production, utilization and R&D for Methanol
and DME.
Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC), an
autonomous body of Department of Science and Technology, took up the
task of preparing roadmap for Production and Utilisation of Methanol &
DME.
Now, the Road Map on Production / Utilization issues of Methanol and
DME has been completed. The recommendations of the Experts Group and
the comprehensive roadmap drawn up will be useful to government, R&D
institutes, academia, policy makers, and industries for setting technology
trajectory and implementation schedule.
