Preamble

eeping in view the current high growth trajectory of our
Country and sharply increasing energy requirements being
Kmostly met through imports, NITI Aayog had constituted
a core team for working on all aspects of Methanol & DME
and evaluating technologies, prioritizing R&D, nucleating and
pursuing scaling up efforts. With this in view, three different
groups had been constituted to focus on issues related to R&D,
Production and Utilization of Methanol and DME and come up
               with a road map.
The Experts Group, to begin with, decided to collate the status
of technologies & other issues related to production of Methanol
and DME. It was decided to get this carried out through Consultant. The survey report
prepared, comprises information collected from literature, available in public domain
besides inputs from experts and organizations like- Methanol Institute and International
DME Association, etc. The report, guided by the Experts Group on Production of Methanol
& DME, examined issues related to production of methanol from high ash coal and biomass
and also assessed current status of technologies and their cost effectiveness besides
highlighting technologies available nationally and internationally.
Subsequent to that, the Experts Group, deliberated within and also in the International
Seminar, organized during the first week of September 2016, towards designing a road
map for nucleating, developing & promoting technologies for production of Methanol &
               DME in our Country.
                                                                                                         th
The draft road map was also discussed in NITI Aayog in a meeting convened on 16
November 2016 under the Chairmanship of Dr. V.K. Saraswat, Member (S&T), NITI Aayog.
It is hoped that the Survey report and the road map, would be instrumental in catalysing
& nucleating actions for developing, establishing, demonstrating and commercialising
Methanol Production in our country. Continuous guidance, support and contribution of
every member of the Experts Group, in the process, is gratefully acknowledged.
