POTABLE WATER
SUPPLY INEQUITIES AND LOPSIDED ECONOMICS
In cities of developing
countries it is the poor
who pay more, much
more, in terms of time and
money, to access water
compared to those with
official connections to
water utilities. The urban
poor across Asia pay 20-
40 times more per liter than
what connected users pay.
Moreover, piped water is a
service that pays back by
saving time, money, energy
and health.
In most countries
water tariffs (price that
consumers pay for water)
are much lower than the
cost of delivered water.
Low tariffs encourage
wasteful consumption,
leave less supplies for
outlying customers and
enhance risk of system
wide interruptions.
Low tariffs also make it
more affordable for informal
water vendors to resell tap
water to the poor at higher
rates.
