Sound Quality
& Jury Techniques
The Sound Quality of a product is important when assessing its total quality. For products ranging from cars to hand tools to golf clubs, not only the level but also the quality of the sound it makes is part of the customer experience. Many factors come into play in the sound quality evaluation process and need to be considered both subjectively and objectively. Traditional objective measuring and analysis methods, such as A-weighted sound pressure and FFT analysis, are not enough to analyze product sound. Customer expectations and evaluations are important factors for determining Sound Quality because, in the end, only humans can tell the designer whether the product has the right sound.
Objectives
• Explain the basics of sound quality
• Introduction to different metrics used in SQ
• Understand the concepts behind Jury evaluations
• The role of SQ quality in product development/design
Prerequisites – Basic knowledge of acoustics, NVH and/or have taken Fundamental of Acoustics & Vibration.
Participants – This course is designed for both users of SQ system and those that are new to the application.
Tire Testing
This course is meant to provide an overview of the tools, techniques, and approaches to tire NVH problems. Topics to be discussed include an overview of tire noise generation mechanisms, exterior tire noise, and interior tire noise, as well as practical perspectives and examples from an industry expert. Additionally, a novel approach will be presented, intended for tire manufacturers and automotive OEMs looking to streamline their tire noise testing process by measuring predominantly at the test stand level rather than the vehicle level. This approach improves the efficiency and consistency of test results while limiting the need for on-road vehicle testing. Industry Expert, Jim Thompson will be co-instructing the course.
Objectives
• Introduce testing methods for tire noise w/ case study
• Understand the role of tire noise in vehicle development • Tire noise generation/propagation
Prerequisites – Basic knowledge of acoustics, NVH and/or have taken Fundamental of Acoustics & Vibration.
Participants – This course is designed for tire manufactures and those dealing with tire noise issues
