For all of the animals at Brookeld Zoo,
food is part of a healthy nutrition plan but
also a reason to express natural behaviors.
TRY THIS AT HOME
Without peeking, do you know how many grain servings the
average adult should consume in one day? Vegetables? Not sure?
Check the updated food chart at choosemyplate.gov.
What about Fido? Nutritional needs change with the age and
size of your dog, but a not-too-active 50-pound dog should get
about 989 calories a day, including 2.5% to 4.5% from fiber.
Aminimum of 5.5% of the diet should come from fats and
10% from protein. Check with your veterinarian to find out
theproper nutrition for your pet.
Perusing the grocery aisles for applesauce and french fries?
Goback to basics with whole apples and real potatoes.
Occasionally mix a little fresh fish or other lean meats in
your cat or dog’s regular food. Offer berries to the birdy
and cabbage leaves to the bunny.
Visit an international market. Select fruits or vegetables—
jackfruit, prickly pear, mung beans, jicama—you’ve never
tried before. Research online or ask a store staff member for
suggestions on how to enjoy a newtreat.
The occasional frozen green beans and crunchy carrots offer
temperature and texture surprises in your dog’s bowl.
