Perspective
The past eight months have been incredibly challenging as we all continue to deal with
the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Since Brookfield Zoo reopened to the public
on July 1, it has been operating with limited guest capacity and with all of the buildings and
attractions closed, as mandated by the state. Because we are limited in the number of guests
we can allow into the zoo and by the inability to open our buildings, we have made the difficult
decision to temporarily close the zoo to the public from January 1 through and including
February 28, 2021. We plan to reopen to the public on March 1, within state restrictions.
By Stuart D. Strahl, Ph.D. As always, the safety of our guests, volunteers, staff, and animals is our top priority.
President & CEO During this closure, similar to the temporary closure that took place from March 19 to
June 30, essential animal care specialists and veterinary staff will provide the animals with
the same high level of care.
This issue of Gateways highlights some of the vital work that goes on behind the scenes
to achieve this high level of care. You’ll read about members of our dedicated Animal
Programs staff who work cooperatively with other institutions all over North America to
make decisions that impact animal breeding, conservation, research, and husbandry for
many years to come. Our environmental quality manager, John Kanzia—along with
members of our Plant and Facilities staff—are on call 24/7 to ensure that the
critical life support systems our animals need to survive and thrive do not falter.
The creativity and resilience of our staff during the pandemic is showcased
in an article about members of our Conservation, Education & Training
(CET) Department who successfully pivoted from face-to-face classes and
programming to virtual programming, while expanding and strengthening
their programs at the same time.
During the ongoing pandemic, we are reminded of the perseverance,
understanding, and tremendous support of our staff, members, and guests.
Yet our scaled-back operations have placed a significant financial burden on
the institution. In response, we launched a special fundraising campaign—
BALD the Above & Beyond Campaign—with the goal of raising $10 million
EAGLE by April 30, 2021. This revenue will ensure the health and well-being of
our 2,500 animals and the continuation of other essential operations at
Brookfield Zoo and the Chicago Zoological Society.
Thanks to the generosity of our members, trustees, and donors, we have made
significant progress to date—but we are not there yet. Please consider contributing to our
Above & Beyond Campaign. For more information or to make a contribution, please visit

We look forward to celebrating the upcoming holiday season with you at our 39th annual
Holiday Magic light festival, presented by ComEd and Meijer. This year, we are offering an
expanded schedule, giving you and your family 10 additional open evenings and expanded
hours. You’ll also find some exciting new attractions such as the new Game of Gnomes—
Can you find the 24 enchanting gnomes hidden throughout the park? Kids can drop off
their letters to Santa in the giant box located on the south mall and outdoor food stands and
merchandise kiosks will have seasonal food and drink offerings and unique holiday gifts for
purchase. We hope to see you there!
