Perspective
hen Brookfield Zoo opened 90 years ago,
it presented animals in naturalistic habitats,
Wmany of them outdoors, instead of inside
cages or barred exhibits. The concept, which
originated in European zoos, was revolutionary in
North America at the time. Since then, Brookfield
Zoo has continued to enjoy an international
reputation for innovation and excellence.
I am especially proud of the trailblazing role Brookfield Zoo has played
in advancing zoological medicine, including in the field of veterinary
diagnostic imaging. Besides being one of the first zoos in the world to
invest in an on-site computed tomography (CT) scanner, Brookfield Zoo
was the first zoo to employ board-certified veterinary radiologists and
created a radiology consulting service focused exclusively on zoo animals
and wildlife that assists other zoos and aquariums around the world.
