highly of you, so it was inevitable that I compose this letter to you, directly.
My plans have changed and I realize I must roll the dice of fate. I will either end up in prison, or dead, and I much prefer the latter. However, in an attempt to redeem my own soul, I will sign this letter and send it to you to bring to the authorities. I do not expect forgiveness, nor is it mercy I seek. That will be left up to you and your brother for your own self-preservation. Selfishly, this letter is being written to exonerate only myself for I strongly suspect I may be crossing over to the other side. Either way, your brother will unintentionally be set free.
By the time you receive this, my own fate will have been decided. But to help ensure the direction my soul takes afterwards, I want to confess in writing that I, alone, kidnapped Rachel Spence. The detectives are by now putting together the puzzle. Therefore, when you add this letter to their collection of pieces, it will no doubt, expedite your brother’s release.
I would apologize, but it would be pointless and bogus. I know you are a devout believer, but I lost that type of faith a long time ago. I know that everything that happens, just happens. There is no rhyme, there is no reason, there is no master plan. We are all floating on an endless sea of unpredictability. One day we are here. The next we’re gone. It’s all by chance, happenstance and luck. There is a part of me that envies your naiveté, believing faith and prayer can overcome everything. Oh,
