certainly this was the time for her salvation. She knew know the powerful ingredients that had been missing from her prior attempts at sobriety: faith and prayer. Having those, finally a part of her soul, this time she knew she would succeed.
“One Day at a Time” was the familiar formula for addiction recovery. Although, it was a very successful strategy for most to follow, she knew it wouldn’t apply to her journey. She felt a certainty in her heart, in her soul, that she had found something that would replace drugs forever. She had no doubts anymore that she would never go back. Her heart felt filled and complete every day knowing she had accepted her savior and thus received salvation, the one word responsible for bringing her out of the darkness.
She wondered about her brother, Brian. Since she’d moved a couple of hours away to North Haledon, she wondered if he’d ever tried to reach out to her at her last known location, that horrible slumlord apartment house near Millville. The day she left, she packed only her book of bible stories, some jeans and a few t-shirts. The sneakers she had on were the only shoes she took with her since the others were cheap heals only worn to entice potential customers. They say objects can’t hold memories, but those shoes certainly did and she wanted to leave those scenes behind forever. She left no forwarding address because she couldn’t think of anything she’d want forwarded from there. She was a new Laura and she’d left that “other” Laura in Millville.
Sober six years now, she still hadn’t wanted to start a relationship, if ever. She was an attractive woman, though her face bore obvious remnants of drugs and abuse. Her complexion showed lasting signs of a
