The next morning, I awoke and began putting the schematic into action. I waited for Brian to leave for work and I went upstairs into his room. I gathered his hair from his comb and placed it carefully in a plastic baggy. I perused the medication he had placed in the medicine cabinet. Xanax, Zoloft -- nothing I didn’t expect to find in a neurotic ex-con’s medicinal stash. I took one of each and put them in a separate baggie...that should suffice. I didn’t want him to notice any missing. Next, I went to his laptop. It was password protected, but I wasn’t deterred. I tried “houseguest.” Then I tried “Gabel” with various scenarios. I tried to recall our conversations and what Brian may have repeated or focused upon. I remembered he used the word “redemption” quite often. On a whim, I typed in: “BGRedemption.” I was shocked when the computer let me in; it was as though my whole plan was truly destined to become a reality.
I began with many searches on Google that I knew would be saved in his search history and caches. I searched for the coffee shop, Rachel’s address and some hardware stores. I searched for things like: “rope,” “drugs that knock you out,” and last but not least, “how to get away with murder.” Sure, it seems too obvious. But the detectives would know that Brian is a very naïve man, especially to 21st century technology. He would have no knowledge of what a computer retains and that searches on the Internet are regularly used as evidence in prosecution cases. When I was done, the detectives would have a slam dunk case against him for kidnapping...and what follows. After all, that’s why I chose him -- his prior conviction for kidnapping fit perfectly into my schematic.
