I Was You
You see an old woman, weakened and gray. You glance at me curtly and then look away.
I am not offended.
I assign you no blame. For, I clearly remember when I did the same.
Today, it seems like forever you’ll be youthful and free. But, there was a time I was you and too soon, you’ll be me.
Time is a cruel teacher; its lessons are slow -- providing too late things we need to know.
You stand there enjoying the privileges of youth while naively denying what will be your truth.
The day will come quickly when your hair grows thin, and lines will form
in your flawless skin.
Yes, it’s hard to comprehend at the age of twenty-two -- that you’ll someday be me and that I was once, you.
