As a prelude to the kind of photography layouts Jack Fritscher created for Drummer, the
two photographs pictured are part of his photo feature “The Long, Last Days Before
the Priesthood: A Story of School’s End” which Fritscher wrote and photographed for
The Josephinum Review (May 22, 1963). When he cast a real seminarian in his pho-
tographs, Fritscher chose a straight man who was as masculine, blond, and bear-like
as the men who would later surface in his homomasculine photography in Drummer.
