Top and bottom: In the 1977 Drummer salon, San Francisco Golden Gloves boxing
promoter Greg Varney, photographer David Hurles (Old Reliable), and editor in chief
Jack Fritscher produced an evening of man-to-man wrestling and boxing with a group of
athletes including Jim “Thumper” McPherson and John Handley of the New York Wres-
tling Club (NYWC). (Handley broke Thumper’s shoulder.) In addition to the bonhomie,
the goal was to shoot photographs for Fritscher’s upcoming “Gay Jock Sports” article for
Drummer 20 (January 1978). Photographs by David Hurles (Old Reliable) ©David Hurles.
