Fritscher. After police harassment in the 1960s calmed down, there was a brief shining
window in gay liberation when gays and cops played ball, until the night of the White
Night Riot, May 21, 1979. That night angry gays, attacking San Francisco City Hall, set
police cars on fire, and the SFPD retaliated by marching down Castro Street using their
billy-clubs. Top: Third from left, profile, glasses (circled): Jack Green, director of Fritscher’s
play Coming Attractions (1976). Middle: Profile (circled) Mark Hemry three years before
meeting Fritscher in the zero degrees of separation.
