Top. In 1934. George Fritscher, born of immigrant Austrian parents on a farm in
Heron Lake, Minnesota, was, at age 17, a star player for Heron Lake High School
when he was recruited by a sports-scholarship scout from Routt High School in
Jacksonville to start in August 1935. Bottom. In 1948, he was continuing his love
of sports on the basketball team of his employer, the Peoria Journal Star newspaper.
