Chapter 1
How to Price Loads
Keep in mind that your local economy and competition will set the rate. Coming into this
industry with that knowledge will help you to not over or under bid when going after a contract
which could ultimately be the determining factor on if you will or not.
There are 2 common ways that dump truck owner will charge their clients:
• Charging by the load
• Charging by the tonnage
1. Tonnage- weight in tons, especially of cargo or freight.
In some instances, a tonnage gig could pay great especially hauling for residential
customers, but for commercial dump truck work with all of the waiting at jobs and things
that happen there's no way it would work out for anyone.
Hoffman Transportation charge both hourly $85 - $105 / hr. with minimum 6-8hrs or
tonnage. Depending on whether it’s site to site work or if the truck is loading at a pit.
You must factor in all variables when coming up with your prices:
• Mileage
• Fuel
• How long will the truck be out
• How much will you have to pay your driver for the day
• Post deliver maintenance (cleaning the debris from your truck)
