SVMIC Telemedicine: Essentials of Virtual Care Delivery
• How to escalate care to an in-person visit, including
referral to another provider for an in-person consultation
Have a functional knowledge of how the following affect
telemedicine practice:
• Current state laws and state medical board rules
• Rules for informed consent
• Rules for prescriptions and controlled substance
• Licensing requirements for providers
• Requirements for reimbursement by Medicare, Medicaid,
other federal and state agencies, and private payors
As patients and providers become more comfortable with
technology for remote monitoring and communication, patients’
desire to obtain healthcare services via telemedicine will
continue to grow. In some demographic segments, this desire
for remotely receiving healthcare has already converted into an
expectation that providers offer the option of telemedicine to
their patients. If such an option is not available, it is becoming
increasingly likely that certain patients will choose another
provider offering telemedicine.
