Bathroom Floor Plans
Whether adding a new bathroom or just restyling an existing bathroom, it’s important to observe some
basic design rules. The minimum size for a three-fixture bathroom is 5' by 7' (Figure 13-7). Increasing
that to 8' by 8' allows space for linen storage, cleaning equipment and supplies (Figure 13-8).
Figure 13-9 shows a bath divided into two compartments. That makes the bathroom suitable for use by
two people, while preserving privacy. Minimum floor space for the toilet portion of a two-compartment
bath is 3' by 5', assuming no tub. If a tub is included, you’ll need a minimum of 5' by 5'. The lavatory
compartment can be 4' x 5'. The interior dimensions of a compact two-compartment bathroom could be
as little as 5' by 9' if you have a connecting door that slides or folds rather than swings. If a swinging
door is planned, as in Figure 13-9, a floor area measuring 8' by 10'6" or 5' by 12' creates a more
comfortable bathroom.
