Adding a Roof Overhang
Many older homes have little or no roof overhang. Without an adequate overhang, rain and melting snow
trickle down the wall finish, creating moisture problems in siding and trim, and at window and door
openings, as well as increasing the moisture content at the foundation.
Extending the roof overhang will both improve the appearance of the house and reduce the maintenance
required on siding and exterior trim. If you’re adding new sheathing, consider extending the sheathing an
inch or two beyond the edge of the existing roof. This is both an inexpensive and comparatively easy
improvement.
