Submitted and presented by Els Siebel, the Auguste Le Gras imported Sloughis from
Netherlands. Algeria and Tunisia which enabled him to
establish the first kennel of this breed in
Auguste Le Gras (1864-1915), was a Dutch the Netherlands with the first litters born
artist born in Amsterdam, February in 1901.
21, 1864. Fluent in Arabic, Le Gras traveled
to North Africa and lived for a while in
Ghardaia, Algeria. In those days, the
Sloughi was a purely romantic dog, fitting
perfectly in the "Jugend style" era, with the
sense of adventure and the love for foreign
countries.
The breed’s origins in the African desert,
images of the Sheiks in their white flowing
djellabas, the Sloughi’s ancient history, and
the dogs’ elegant lines appealed to Le Gras'
romantic mind.
