The traditional “Berner Fuchsjagd” is still held
today by the WSVB (Windhundsportverein Bern)
according to this old system. This competition
was already held when there was no fixed track. It
is normally held on the first weekend of
November. The ‘Fuchsjagd’ is always held

nationally because no time is measured. The
results are always determined by the order of
arrival. The winner receives a real foxtail.

In Switzerland, the horse racing system was adopted. In the land of precision clocks, the
results were determined by fully automatic timekeeping and finish line photos. The
Longines and Omega brands determined the winners and finalists.

In 1970, the Swiss Kennel Club (Schweizerische Kynologische Gesellschaft, SKG) decided
that from then on, the interests of sighthounds would be represented by a newly
established committee, the “Interessengemeinschaft für das Windhundrennwesen” der
Schweizerischen Kynologischen Gesellschaft (IGWR). This committee is still active.

Between 1969 and 1975, five racing clubs were founded and the foundations were laid for
five permanent racetracks:
1971: Construction of the racetrack in Lotzwil by the WSVB (Windhundsportverein Bern)
1971: Creation of the racetrack in Rifferswil by the SWRV (Schweizer Windhund-
Rennverein)
1972: Construction of the racetrack in Versoix, run by the SLCL (Société Lémanique des
Courses de Lévriers). This track was closed in 2016.
1974: Creation of the racetrack in Kleindöttingen by the WRK (Windhundrennverein

Kleindöttingen).
In 1977, construction of a racetrack in St. Antonino was started by the ATCL, later known
as AdL (Amatori del Levriero).

Currently, four racing clubs, two coursing clubs, and two breed clubs are actively

involved in sighthound racing.
