Sloughis active in racing in Switzerland

The first registration of a Sloughi in the Swiss studbook dates back to 1918: Zina, born July
18, 1918, was probably also bred in Switzerland. Then it takes until 1977 before we see the
next registration: import of Richa el Djerid. She becomes the foundation bitch of the ‘El
Djerid’ kennel owned by the Swiss couple Rolf and Rosy Bächtiger. The first litter in this
kennel was bred in 1978, with Richa. For many years, Rosy and Ralf were the most
important and active Sloughi breeders in Switzerland. Later, they also became active in

the sport.

In Switzerland, racing competitions were regularly held on snow, often at a horse racing
track. This was also the case on January 25, 1987, in Arosa, on a frozen lake, in the
afternoon from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. There were so many registrations that many people

had to be disappointed. The winners were determined per race. Sloughis were also
present here:
1. El Sahab du Montouchet de la Horde d’Or (m) – 36.11
2. Salima el Djerid (f) – 36.57
3. Va’Sima du Montouchet de la Horde d’Or (f) – 36.65
4. U’Shilla du Montouchet de la Horde d’Or (?) – 44.99

Now, in 2026, there is only one Sloughi with a racing licence: Almaboubin Cosmo.
However, there are six Sloughis with a coursing licence. Both racing and coursing are
popular sighthound sports in Switzerland.
