Chapter 6 - Signaling
QUALIFIED SIGNAL PERSON
A signal person must:
• Know and understand the type of signals used;
• Be competent in the application of the type of signals used;
• Have a basic understanding of equipment operation and limitations, including the crane dynamics
involved in swinging and stopping loads and boom deflection from hoisting loads; and
• Know and understand the relevant requirements of the provisions of the standard relating to signals.
A signal person must be available during crane operation when travel or placement is obstructed or not
in full view of the operator. The standard signal is by hand, any signals that include voice, audible or
new signals are considered non standard. The use of non standard signals must be communicated and
understood by the operator, signal person and lift director if available prior to operation.
Only one signal person may give signals to a crane or derrick at a time except in the case of an
emergency stop. Anyone onsite aware of a safety issue may signal the operator to stop.
See Appendix E for a chart of Standard Hand Signals
