Earthcheck—R U Ok?
Did you know…stigma, taboo and laws around suicide mean that people do not seek help?
Around the world this week, organisations shine a light on suicide prevention - so let's all
try to make a big difference in raising awareness and encouraging conversations! World
Suicide Prevention Day and R U OK? Day encourages us to reach out in a casual yet
meaningful way to help people open up and have a chat about how they are feeling.
It only takes a minute to ask someone, "R U OK?"
Every 40 seconds, someone dies by suicide which has devastating impacts for the
families, friends and communities. Suicide has no national boundaries and despite
improved research and knowledge about suicide prevention, many health systems are
unable or fail to provide care for those who need it most. In many communities,
resources for suicide prevention are scarce, limited or non-existent and unfortunately,
suicide prevention is often a low priority for governments and policy makers.
Look out for the following warning signs, especially if you are concerned that someone
you know may not be OK.
Communication
Loneliness and depression can be isolating, often leading to struggles with mental illness.
Reaching out and spending some quality time with those around you can make a
difference. Here's a few steps to connect:
1. Ask "Are you OK?
2. Keep them safe and find out if they have already
done anything to try to harm themselves. This will help
you to understand, how urgent the situation is.
3. Be there in any way that shows support for the
person at risk.
4. Help them connect and encourage them to contact
Lifeline to establish a safety net for moments they find
themselves in a crisis.
