A Total Eclipse of the...Sun
Monday, August 21st marked the first total solar eclips visible from anywhere on
the mainland United States since the total solar eclipse of February 1979.
During the total eclipse, the moon blocked out the sun from Oregon to South
Carolina, turning day to night for those in the path of totality. The eclipse lasted
about two minutes and forty seconds with the maximum eclipse in Central Iowa
occuring around 1:08pm.
To commemorate this
rare occasion, the Vernon Company adjusted the lunch hour to 12:30-
1:30pm and provided all employees with lunch. Solar glasses were also
provided to all employees to view the eclipse. While the weather was
cloudy, employees were able to see a few seconds of the eclipse.
The next eclipse will be in April 2024, but it will not be as visible from as
many locations in the United States as this 2017 eclipse was. It is expected
to last about three minutes and twenty-two seconds.
Vernon's Annual Blood Drive
The Vernon Company sponsored a Bloodmobile on Thursday, August 24th . We had a
total of 14 people signed up to donate, two of which were donating blood for the first
time. Thanks to the generosity of our employees, we were able to donate a total of 14
pints of blood. That means, as a team, up to 40 patients will have their lives saved or
sustained with the donations from The Vernon Company.
Thank you to everyone who was able to donate and help save lives! Heather Van Dusseldorp, Human Resources
