Tikanga Māori
Level: 1, 2, 3. Please note the assessments are all Unit Standards and are internally
assessed.
Aims: To build knowledge and skills in Te Ao Māori specifically in Taranaki through Unit
Standards that consist of waiata, tikanga, protocols, kawa and research. Māori tourism is
also explored at Level 3.
Competencies: Communicate and reflect on relevant Taranaki history through waiata and
tikanga that not only explores the Māori language but also enables students to use these
waiata and tikanga in appropriate settings outside of the classroom. Assessments include
performing the waiata and particular events throughout the year will count towards the
assessment task. There are also research topics where students study Māori leaders of
significance who have impacted on the Māori community at some stage with particular
focus on past leaders in Taranaki eg: Te Whiti o Rongomai, Tohu Kākahi, Māui Pōmare.
Research topics will also cover Hāhi Māori or Māori religions of significance such as Rātana,
Ringatū, Pai Mārire.

Other essential information: Past Kapa Haka experience is helpful but not a requirement.
