Classical Studies
Level: 3
Aims: To gain understanding and appreciation of the influence of the Classical World on our
culture, philosophy, literature, politics, art, religion and sciences. This course encourages
deep thinking.
Competencies: Critical thinking; Using primary and secondary sources to develop
independent and authentic research methods; Analysing and evaluating social, political and
artistic aspects of the classical world; Understanding connections between the classical
world and society in Aotearoa; Developing advanced written and oral communication skills;
Self-management.
Pathways this course contributes towards: Classical Studies is a highly recommended
course for many tertiary degrees including Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Law.
Other essential information: This is a language-rich course which is taught with an
emphases on supporting and developing effective literacy and communication skills.
Students may be offered an opportunity to sit Scholarship in Classical Studies.
