Swift-Cut Automation
Alan Swift, research and development director at Swift-Cut.
Based in Burton-on-Tren, Staffordshire, SWIFT- CUT AUTOMATION’s story began in early 2011 when Alan Swift ran a business manufacturing parts for the heavy goods vehicle market. Tired of outsourcing, he designed and built a small CNC plasma cutting machine with one simple goal – to be less dependent on suppliers and be able to handle orders with more flexibility and at a faster pace. After being asked to
build machines for other companies, Alan and business partner Derek Davies launched Swift- Cut in the spring of 2011.
In seven short years, Swift-Cut has risen from a company designing and manufacturing just one CNC plasma cutting machine in the UK to a global success story – launching in 35 countries, exporting over 80% of business globally and producing a range of highly sought after, extremely efficient plasma and waterjet cutting machinery.
The company’s position as UK ambassadors for successful export was compounded when Dr Liam Fox and the Department of International Trade officially opened the new factory and demo suite
in 2017, at the time saying: “These are exactly the sort of companies we need to be replicating across the UK.”
The emphasis on the quality of manufacturing of a standard product and its place in the global market means that the business scalability of Swift-Cut is immeasurable. Looking around the Swift-Cut facilities, Dr Fox said: “Success stories like Swift-Cut Automation are flying the flag for British quality and expertise, bringing a boost to their local economies.”
As recipients of this year’s Queen’s Award for International Trade, Swift-Cut’s position as a global success story is further sealed. It’s a huge honour to be recognised on an international level, proving that Swift-Cut has made remarkable progress internationally, representing UK manufacturing on a global scale and demonstrating the very best of British design and workmanship.
Swift-Cut’s international global development director, Neil Smith, is understandably delighted at the recognition, saying: “We are thrilled that our international growth and success has been recognised by this Queen’s Award; arguably the

most prestigious business award in the UK and a testament to our product, our team and our vision.”
Swift-Cut is keen to build on its success – investment in innovation, technology and people has always been integral to Swift-Cut, never more so than now when export is at an all-time high and they have the honour and acclaim of being
a Queen’s Awards for International Trade 2018 winner.
