INNOVATION
the editorial entry and proofed below here.
Newham Training and Education Centre – NEWTEC
NEWHAM TRAINING AND EDUCATION CENTRE (NEWTEC) is an award- winning charity organisation offering vocational training opportunities and high quality registered day care nursery facilities in Stratford
and East London. It is well placed and experienced to respond to the challenges and opportunities available in the Newham area, which is one of the most disadvantaged and ethnically diverse areas in the UK.
NEWTEC’s mission emphasises the importance of a variety of services in realising the overall purpose of the charity: “To provide the highest quality care services and related vocational training for young people, adults and employers.”
NEWTEC supports young people and adults, many of whom are vulnerable and disadvantaged, owing to issues including cultural barriers, being disabled, having a learning disability or a mental health problem. Our services are educational/training focused, supporting young people/ adults to gain confidence, improve educational attainment, acquire new skills, volunteer and move towards gaining employment and supporting community cohesion.
Over the past five years, NEWTEC has developed an innovative model to support 16 to 18year-olds develop a career in nursery care services. What makes our model innovative is that once qualified, NEWTEC establishes a new nursery and employs those who have been trained. This age group is the most difficult to engage (particularly those from Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic [BAME] communities) and moreover, to employ.
Our approach has been to identify those hardest to reach and not in education, employment or training (referred to as NEET) and provide them with training/education, and gaining a qualification (minimum standard is
a level 2). Many of the young people (the majority of whom are from BAME communities) go on to gain higher level qualifications, with many acquiring

a foundation degree or BA degree through Kingston University, which NEWTEC delivers in collaboration with Kingston University.

One Team Logic Limited
ONE TEAM LOGIC is the maker of MyConcern®, a trusted and secure software solution for safeguarding children and vulnerable young people. It’s used extensively in schools and colleges across the UK and worldwide, as well as by local authorities, sports organisations, charities, youth groups and training companies. The system enables the recording and management of the full range of safeguarding and well-being issues facing children, young people and adults at risk.
The software provides powerful reports, highlighting risks and trends to prompt early intervention by safeguarding professionals. Importantly, the software supports organisations using the system to share safeguarding information securely with trusted third-parties, including professionals in social care, health and policing.
The range of safeguarding risks being encountered by children and young adults has grown exponentially and includes challenging issues such as
child sexual exploitation, female genital mutilation, radicalisation and online bullying. There has also been a significant increase in the number of young people experiencing complex mental health issues, with self-harm a common problem. This creates an enormous responsibility for schools, colleges and other organisations in managing what can be extremely difficult issues.
Martin Baker QPM, managing director, said: “We are hugely honoured that our work has been recognised by Her Majesty The Queen through The Queen’s Award for Enterprise. MyConcern has transformed safeguarding in many settings, and enabled us to work with our customers in the key area of leadership in safeguarding.
“The challenges facing schools and colleges require an end-to-end approach across all public agencies. Repeated child protection tragedies have clearly demonstrated that this is the single most important reform we could make in our national safeguarding and child protection arrangements.
Safeguarding risks being encountered by children and young adults have grown exponentially, resulting in enormous responsibilities falling to schools, colleges and other groups.
It is also vital that disparate issues are joined up – this is critical in identifying potential risks.
“As a safeguarding company our impact on both individuals and communities is direct. The use of MyConcern in any setting where children, young people and vulnerable adults require protection improves their safety, enables them to thrive and ultimately saves lives.”
