                  THE SPARTACIST UPRISING
In the political turmoil of post-war Germany, a group
of radical socialists calling themselves the Spartacists
attempted to challenge the Weimar government. In
January 1919, 50,000 workers went on strike and
demonstrated in Berlin. The government employed
the Freikorps (former soldiers, pictured here) to
stop the revolt. They showed no mercy and
more than 100 workers were killed.
