CROWNING GLORY
65 years ago, on 6 February 1952, King George VI died
and his daughter, Elizabeth, ascended the throne.
Planning for her coronation soon began and the date
was set for 2 June 1953. On that day, the doors of
Westminster Abbey opened at 6am for reporters
and cameramen to take their positions. It was
the first coronation to be televised, and
at 12.34pm, Queen Elizabeth II was
crowned in the Coronation Chair.
