HOT SHOT
#3
IAN SAYS…
For my third shot Ania took me out onto the
streets, just before the sun went down. I used the
űƋƚų±Ĭ Ú±ƼĬĜčĘƋØ ŞŅŸĜƋĜŅĹĜĹč UĜųŸƋĜå ŸŅƤĜƋ üåĬĬ ±ÏųŅŸŸ
the left side of her face. Because the day was
overcast, I switched from the Preset white balance
to Shade for a slightly warmer cast, enhancing the
yellows and oranges. I felt this really brought out
Kirstie’s positivity, and the smile adds to that. I shot
this wide-open at f/1.8 on my 85mm f/1.8 lens to
narrow the depth of field dramatically. I could see
how this made her eyes pop, with the scarf falling
into extreme, soft blur below.
EXPERT INSIGHT
LOCATION SHOOTING
Ania says... When shooting outside in public it’s
good practice to keep an eye on where your kit
is. Shooting on a quiet street isn’t so much of an
issue, but moving equipment out of people’s way
is just common courtesy.
EXPOSURE 1/250 sec, f/1.8, ISO200
LENS 85mm f/1.8
PRO TIP
SHOOT FROM UP HIGH

look down and therefore accentuate the area
beneath the chin. Getting up high above the
model brings out the natural outline of their face
with more flattering results. To get up high either
use steps, or ask the model to sit down on the
ground, as Ian did here.
